Google Chat is at its best on the mobile app, but if you’re using it regularly, across mobile and in the desktop chrome extension, you’ll quickly see the questionable choices made by the developers. Unfortunately, that’s about where the improvements end. That’s really nice and a feature we were hoping for coming from Hangouts. I don't think that I'm asking Hangouts to do something beyond its capabilities.Google Chat added the ability to have rooms where specific topic threads can be created. I have to say that I am not interested in hangouts alternatives, I'm using Hangouts for a reason and there are no good substitutes for my use case. I'm looking for some insight into how I might get Hangouts to resolve contact names. I've tried deleting all hangouts data, switching SMS app to messenger and switching back, signing out of hangouts and signing back in after switching to Messenger, restarting Android, wiping cache partition, basically everything. The uninstall/reinstall dance now causes hangouts to forget all but a few random contact names (names with nothing particularly special about them). But after the update to Android 7.0, the previous fix does not work anymore. The initial problem is basically the same - Hangouts forgets contact names. New Problem: Now, things are a little different. This is supposedly a known issue and was typically resolved, albeit temporarily, by uninstalling hangouts updates, opening hangouts, which wouldn't let you use it without updates, then reinstall updates and then all of the names would be resolved.until they weren't again. The contact remains intact in every other way (in the contacts app, email, etc.) and also retains the contact picture (most of the time) and is linked to the contact but just will not display the name. If enough time elapsed since the last time a contact sent an SMS, Hangouts will basically forget the contact's name and won't display it.
